Se-Methylselenocysteine
Se-Methylselenocysteine (SeMSC) is a naturally occurring seleno-amino acid that is synthesized by plants such as garlic, astragalus, onions, and broccoli. It cannot be synthesized by higher animals. Unlike selenomethionine, which is incorporated into proteins in place of methionine, SeMSC is not incorporated into any proteins, thereby being fully available for the synthesis of selenium-containing enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase. Selenomethionine is the major seleno-compound in cereal grains (wheat grain, maize, and rice), soybeans, and enriched yeast. Seleno-compounds present in plants may have a profound effect upon the health of animals and human subjects. It is now known that the total Se content cannot be used as an indication of its efficacy, but knowledge of individual selenocompounds is necessary to fully assess the significance. Thus, speciation of the seleno-compounds has moved to the forefront. Since animals and man are dependent upon plants for their nutritional requirements, this makes the types of seleno-compounds in plants even more critical. Se enters the food chain through incorporation into plant proteins, mostly as selenocysteine and selenomethionine at normal Se levels. There are two possible pathways for the catabolism of selenomethionine: (1) a transsulfuration pathway via selenocystathionine to produce selenocysteine, which in turn is degraded to H2Se by the enzyme beta-lyase and (2) a transamination-decarboxylation pathway. It was estimated that 90\\\\% of methionine is metabolized through this pathway and thus could be also the major route for selenomethionine catabolism (PMID: 14748935 , Br J Nutr. 2004 Jan;91(1):11-28.). Selenomethionine is an amino acid containing selenium. The L-isomer of selenomethionine, known as Se-met and Sem, is a common natural food source of selenium. In vivo, selenomethionine is randomly incorporated instead of methionine and is readily oxidized. Its antioxidant activity arises from its ability to deplete reactive species. Selenium and sulfur are chalcogen elements that share many chemical properties and the substitution of methionine to selenomethionine may have no effect on protein structure and function. However, the incorporation of selenomethionine into tissue proteins and keratin in horses causes alkali disease. Alkali disease is characterized by emaciation, loss of hair, deformation and shedding of hooves, loss of vitality, and erosion of the joints of long bones. Se-methyl-L-selenocysteine is an L-alpha-amino acid compound having methylselanylmethyl as the side-chain. It has a role as an antineoplastic agent. It is a Se-methylselenocysteine, a non-proteinogenic L-alpha-amino acid and a L-selenocysteine derivative. It is a conjugate base of a Se-methyl-L-selenocysteinium. It is a conjugate acid of a Se-methyl-L-selenocysteinate. It is an enantiomer of a Se-methyl-D-selenocysteine. It is a tautomer of a Se-methyl-L-selenocysteine zwitterion. Methylselenocysteine has been used in trials studying the prevention of Prostate Carcinoma and No Evidence of Disease. Se-Methylselenocysteine is a metabolite found in or produced by Escherichia coli (strain K12, MG1655). Methylselenocysteine is a naturally occurring organoselenium compound found in many plants, including garlic, onions, and broccoli, with potential antioxidant and chemopreventive activities. Se-Methyl-seleno-L-cysteine (MSC) is an amino acid analogue of cysteine in which a methylselenium moiety replaces the sulphur atom of cysteine. This agent acts as an antioxidant when incorporated into glutathione peroxidase and has been shown to exhibit potent chemopreventive activity in animal models. Se-Methylselenocysteine (SeMSC) is a naturally occurring seleno-amino acid that is synthesized by plants such as garlic, astragalus, onions and broccoli. Unlike selenomethionine, which is incorporated into proteins in place of methionine, SeMSC is not incorporated into any proteins, thereby being fully available for the synthesis of selenium-containing enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase. 3-(Methylseleno)alanine is found in many foods, some of which are common cabbage, white cabbage, lima bean, and cauliflower. They derive from C-20 polyunsaturated fatty acids, mainly dihomo-gamma-linoleic (20:3n-6), arachidonic (20:4n-6), and eicosapentaenoic (20:5n-3) acids, through the action of cyclooxygenases-1 and -2 (COX-1 and COX-2). PGB1does not inhibit phospholipase activity, but oligomers of PGB1 (PGBx) extracted from human neutrophils inhibit human phospholipases A2 in vitro and in situ in a dose-dependent manner; these oligomers inhibit arachidonic acid mobilization in human neutrophils and endothelial cells. One mechanism for the pharmacological effects of PGBx may be inhibition of cell-associated and extracellular phospholipase A2. PGB1 has the ability to enhance peripheral vascular resistance and elevate blood pressure. The effect is not central in origin and apparently is not the result of changes in cholinergic or alpha-adrenoceptor sensitivity or changes in vascular smooth muscle susceptibility per se. PGB1 blocks S-phase DNA synthesis; inhibition of DNA synthesis does not appear to require elevated levels of cAMP. (PMID: 7667505, 1477202, 2129000, 2597672, 6635328). Prostaglandins are eicosanoids. The eicosanoids consist of the prostaglandins (PGs), thromboxanes (TXs), leukotrienes (LTs), and lipoxins (LXs). The PGs and TXs are collectively identified as prostanoids. Prostaglandins were originally shown to be synthesized in the prostate gland, thromboxanes from platelets (thrombocytes), and leukotrienes from leukocytes, hence the derivation of their names. All mammalian cells except erythrocytes synthesize eicosanoids. These molecules are extremely potent, able to cause profound physiological effects at very dilute concentrations. All eicosanoids function locally at the site of synthesis, through receptor-mediated G-protein linked signalling pathways. Prostaglandin B1 (PGB1) is a metabolite of PGE1. PGE1 is a prostanoid. Phosphoenolpyruvic acid
Phosphoenolpyruvate, also known as pep or 2-(phosphonooxy)-2-propenoic acid, is a member of the class of compounds known as phosphate esters. Phosphate esters are organic compounds containing phosphoric acid ester functional group, with the general structure R1P(=O)(R2)OR3. R1,R2 = O,N, or halogen atom; R3 = organyl group. Phosphoenolpyruvate is soluble (in water) and an extremely strong acidic compound (based on its pKa). Phosphoenolpyruvate can be found in a number of food items such as okra, endive, chestnut, and dandelion, which makes phosphoenolpyruvate a potential biomarker for the consumption of these food products. Phosphoenolpyruvate can be found primarily in blood, cellular cytoplasm, and saliva, as well as in human prostate tissue. Phosphoenolpyruvate exists in all living species, ranging from bacteria to humans. In humans, phosphoenolpyruvate is involved in several metabolic pathways, some of which include glycolysis, amino sugar metabolism, gluconeogenesis, and glycogenosis, type IC. Phosphoenolpyruvate is also involved in several metabolic disorders, some of which include glycogen storage disease type 1A (GSD1A) or von gierke disease, salla disease/infantile sialic acid storage disease, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase deficiency 1 (PEPCK1), and pyruvate dehydrogenase complex deficiency. Phosphoenolpyruvate (2-phosphoenolpyruvate, PEP) as the ester derived from the enol of pyruvate and phosphate. It exists as an anion; the parent acid, which is only of theoretical interest, is phosphoenolpyruvic acid. PEP is an important intermediate in biochemistry. It has the highest-energy phosphate bond found (−61.9 kJ/mol) in living organisms, and is involved in glycolysis and gluconeogenesis. In plants, it is also involved in the biosynthesis of various aromatic compounds, and in carbon fixation; in bacteria, it is also used as the source of energy for the phosphotransferase system . Phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) is an important chemical compound in biochemistry. It has a high energy phosphate bond, and is involved in glycolysis and gluconeogenesis. In glycolysis, PEP is formed by the action of the enzyme enolase on 2-phosphoglycerate. Metabolism of PEP to pyruvate by pyruvate kinase (PK) generates 1 molecule of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) via substrate-level phosphorylation. ATP is one of the major currencies of chemical energy within cells. In gluconeogenesis, PEP is formed from the decarboxylation of oxaloacetate and hydrolysis of 1 guanosine triphosphate molecule. This reaction is catalyzed by the enzyme phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK). This reaction is a rate-limiting step in gluconeogenesis. (wikipedia). Oxaloacetate
Oxalacetic acid, also known as oxaloacetic acid, keto-oxaloacetate or 2-oxobutanedioate, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as short-chain keto acids and derivatives. These are keto acids with an alkyl chain the contains less than 6 carbon atoms. Oxalacetic acid is a metabolic intermediate in many processes that occur in animals and plants. It takes part in gluconeogenesis, the urea cycle, the glyoxylate cycle, amino acid synthesis, fatty acid synthesis and the citric acid cycle. Oxalacetic acid exists in all living species, ranging from bacteria to plants to humans. Within humans, oxalacetic acid participates in a number of enzymatic reactions. In particular, oxalacetic acid is an intermediate of the citric acid cycle, where it reacts with acetyl-CoA to form citrate, catalyzed by citrate synthase. It is also involved in gluconeogenesis and the urea cycle. In gluconeogenesis oxaloacetate is decarboxylated and phosphorylated by phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase and becomes 2-phosphoenolpyruvate using guanosine triphosphate (GTP) as phosphate source. In the urea cycle, malate is acted on by malate dehydrogenase to become oxaloacetate, producing a molecule of NADH. After that, oxaloacetate can be recycled to aspartate, as this recycling maintains the flow of nitrogen into the cell. In mice, injections of oxalacetic acid have been shown to promote brain mitochondrial biogenesis, activate the insulin signaling pathway, reduce neuroinflammation and activate hippocampal neurogenesis (PMID: 25027327). Oxalacetic acid has also been reported to reduce hyperglycemia in type II diabetes and to extend longevity in C. elegans (PMID: 25027327). Outside of the human body, oxalacetic acid has been detected, but not quantified in, several different foods, such as Persian limes, lemon balms, wild rice, canola, and peanuts. This could make oxalacetic acid a potential biomarker for the consumption of these foods. Oxalacetic acid, also known as ketosuccinic acid or oxaloacetate, belongs to short-chain keto acids and derivatives class of compounds. Those are keto acids with an alkyl chain the contains less than 6 carbon atoms. Thus, oxalacetic acid is considered to be a fatty acid lipid molecule. Oxalacetic acid is soluble (in water) and a moderately acidic compound (based on its pKa). Oxalacetic acid can be synthesized from succinic acid. Oxalacetic acid can also be synthesized into oxaloacetic acid 4-methyl ester. Oxalacetic acid can be found in a number of food items such as daikon radish, sacred lotus, cucurbita (gourd), and tarragon, which makes oxalacetic acid a potential biomarker for the consumption of these food products. Oxalacetic acid can be found primarily in cellular cytoplasm, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and urine, as well as in human liver tissue. Oxalacetic acid exists in all living species, ranging from bacteria to humans. In humans, oxalacetic acid is involved in several metabolic pathways, some of which include the oncogenic action of succinate, the oncogenic action of 2-hydroxyglutarate, glycogenosis, type IB, and the oncogenic action of fumarate. Oxalacetic acid is also involved in several metabolic disorders, some of which include the oncogenic action of l-2-hydroxyglutarate in hydroxygluaricaciduria, transfer of acetyl groups into mitochondria, argininemia, and 2-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase complex deficiency. Moreover, oxalacetic acid is found to be associated with anoxia. Diisobutyl phthalate
Di-(2-methylpropyl)-phthalate, also known as dibp or isobutyl phthalate, is a member of the class of compounds known as benzoic acid esters. Benzoic acid esters are ester derivatives of benzoic acid. Di-(2-methylpropyl)-phthalate is practically insoluble (in water) and an extremely weak basic (essentially neutral) compound (based on its pKa). Di-(2-methylpropyl)-phthalate can be found in kohlrabi, which makes di-(2-methylpropyl)-phthalate a potential biomarker for the consumption of this food product. Di-(2-methylpropyl)-phthalate can be found primarily in urine. Di-(2-methylpropyl)-phthalate is a non-carcinogenic (not listed by IARC) potentially toxic compound. Glycogen
Glycogen is a highly-branched polymer of about 30,000 glucose residues. The simplest structure of glycogen is made up of four units of glucose with an approximate molecular weight of 666 daltons. However, large molecules of glycogen can reach molecular weights in the order of 5 million Da. Most of the glucose units are linked together by alpha-1,4 glycosidic bonds, and approximately 1 in 12 glucose residues also form a 1,6 glycosidic bond with a second glucose, resulting in the creation of a branch. Glycogen only has one reducing end and a large number of non-reducing ends with a free hydroxyl group at carbon 4. The glycogen granules contain both glycogen and the enzymes of glycogen synthesis (glycogenesis) and degradation (glycogenolysis). The enzymes are nested between the outer branches of the glycogen molecules and act on the non-reducing ends. Therefore, the many non-reducing end-branches of glycogen facilitate its rapid synthesis and breakdown. In hypoglycemia caused by excessive insulin, liver glycogen levels are high, but the high insulin level prevents the necessary glycogenolysis to take place to maintain normal blood sugar levels. Glucagon is a common treatment for this type of hypoglycemia. Glycogen is a polysaccharide that is the principal storage form of glucose (Glc) in animal cells. Glycogen is found in the form of granules in the cytosol in many cell types. Hepatocytes (liver cells) have the highest concentration of it - up to 8\\% of the fresh weight in well fed state, or 100 to 120 g in an adult - giving liver a distinctive, starchy taste. In the muscles, glycogen is found in a much lower concentration (1\\% of the muscle mass), but the total amount exceeds that in liver. Small amounts of glycogen are found in the kidneys, and even smaller amounts in certain glial cells in the brain and white blood cells. Glycogen is a highly-branched polymer of about 30,000 glucose residues and has a molecular weight between 106 and 107 daltons (4.8 million approx.). Most of Glc units are linked by alpha-1,4 glycosidic bonds, approximately 1 in 12 Glc residues also makes -1,6 glycosidic bond with a second Glc which results in the creation of a branch. Glycogen only has one reducing end and a large number of non-reducing ends with a free hydroxyl group at carbon 4. The enzymes are nested between the outer branches of the glycogen molecules and act on the non-reducing ends. Dihydroxyacetone
Dihydroxyacetone, also known as 1,3-dihydroxy-2-propanone or glycerone, is a member of the class of compounds known as monosaccharides. Monosaccharides are compounds containing one carbohydrate unit not glycosidically linked to another such unit, and no set of two or more glycosidically linked carbohydrate units. Monosaccharides have the general formula CnH2nOn. Dihydroxyacetone is soluble (in water) and a very weakly acidic compound (based on its pKa). Dihydroxyacetone can be found in a number of food items such as cauliflower, green bell pepper, black cabbage, and sweet basil, which makes dihydroxyacetone a potential biomarker for the consumption of these food products. Dihydroxyacetone can be found primarily in urine, as well as in human muscle and stratum corneum tissues. Dihydroxyacetone exists in all living species, ranging from bacteria to humans. Dihydroxyacetone is primarily used as an ingredient in sunless tanning products. It is often derived from plant sources such as sugar beets and sugar cane, and by the fermentation of glycerin . Dihydroxyacetone (also known as DHA) is a ketotriose compound. Its addition to blood preservation solutions results in better maintenance of 2,3-diphosphoglycerate levels during storage. It is readily phosphorylated to dihydroxyacetone phosphate by triokinase in erythrocytes. In combination with naphthoquinones, it acts as a sunscreening agent. Dihydroxyacetone is the simplest of all ketoses and, having no chiral centre, is the only one that has no optical activity. Dihydroxyacetone is a simple non-toxic sugar. It is often derived from plant sources such as sugar beets and sugar cane, by the fermentation of glycerin. Dihydroxyacetone is a white crystalline powder which is water soluble. 1,3-Dihydroxyacetone (DHA), the main active ingredient in sunless tanning skin-care preparations and an important precursor for the synthesis of various fine chemicals, is produced on an industrial scale by microbial fermentation of glycerol over Gluconobacter oxydans[1]. 1,3-Dihydroxyacetone (DHA), the main active ingredient in sunless tanning skin-care preparations and an important precursor for the synthesis of various fine chemicals, is produced on an industrial scale by microbial fermentation of glycerol over Gluconobacter oxydans[1].

No information is available on the chronic (long-term), reproductive, developmental, or carcinogenic effects of dimethyl phthalate in humans. Animal studies have reported slight effects on growth and on the kidney from chronic oral exposure to the chemical. EPA has classified dimethyl phthalate as a Group D, not classifiable as to human carcinogencity. Dimethyl phthalate is a natural product found in Eleutherococcus sessiliflorus, Allium ampeloprasum, and other organisms with data available. Dimethyl phthalate is a phthalate ester. Phthalate esters are esters of phthalic acid and are mainly used as plasticizers, primarily used to soften polyvinyl chloride. They are found in a number of products, including glues, building materials, personal care products, detergents and surfactants, packaging, childrens toys, paints, pharmaceuticals, food products, and textiles. Phthalates are hazardous due to their ability to act as endocrine disruptors. They are being phased out of many products in the United States and European Union due to these health concerns.
