Heme is the color-furnishing portion of hemoglobin. It is found free in tissues and as the prosthetic group in many hemeproteins. A heme or haem is a prosthetic group that consists of an iron atom contained in the center of a large heterocyclic organic ring called a porphyrin. Not all porphyrins contain iron, but a substantial fraction of porphyrin-containing metalloproteins have heme as their prosthetic subunit; these are known as hemoproteins.
Protoheme ix, also known as ferroprotoheme or [fe(ppix)], is a member of the class of compounds known as metalloporphyrins. Metalloporphyrins are polycyclic compounds containing a porphyrin moiety and a metal atom. Protoheme ix can be found in a number of food items such as orange mint, cucumber, deerberry, and pear, which makes protoheme ix a potential biomarker for the consumption of these food products.
Ferroheme, a complex of ferrous iron and a porphyrin, is an isosteric inhibitor of fatty acid binding to rat liver fatty acid binding protein[1][2].
