Isovitexin 7-glucoside, also known as isovitexin-7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside or saponarin, is a member of the class of compounds known as flavonoid-7-o-glycosides. Flavonoid-7-o-glycosides are phenolic compounds containing a flavonoid moiety which is O-glycosidically linked to carbohydrate moiety at the C7-position. Isovitexin 7-glucoside is slightly soluble (in water) and a very weakly acidic compound (based on its pKa). Isovitexin 7-glucoside can be found in barley and cucumber, which makes isovitexin 7-glucoside a potential biomarker for the consumption of these food products.
Saponarin is a natural flavonoid isolated from Gypsophila trichotoma, with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective activities. Saponarin activates AMPK in a calcium-dependent manner, thus regulating gluconeogenesis and glucose uptake[1][2][3].
