Sulfamethizole

4-amino-N-(5-methyl-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)benzene-1-sulfonamide

C9H10N4O2S2 (270.0245)

Sulfamethizole is only found in individuals that have used or taken this drug. It is a sulfathiazole antibacterial agent. Sulfamethizole is a competitive inhibitor of bacterial enzyme dihydropteroate synthetase. The normal para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) substrate is prevented from binding. The inhibited reaction is necessary in these organisms for the synthesis of folic acid.
