Polyprenylbenzene-1,2-diols are compounds containing a polyisoprene chain attached to a catechol group. 3-(all-trans-octaprenyl)benzene-1,2-diol is practically insoluble (in water) and a very weakly acidic compound (based on its pKa). 3-(all-trans-octaprenyl)benzene-1,2-diol can be found in a number of food items such as thistle, cardoon, brussel sprouts, and capers, which makes 3-(all-trans-octaprenyl)benzene-1,2-diol a potential biomarker for the consumption of these food products. 3-(all-trans-octaprenyl)benzene-1,2-diol may be a unique E.coli metabolite.
