Disialylgalactosylgloboside is a renal cell carcinoma (RCC)-associated antigen which mediates adhesion of RCC TOS-1 cells to certain lung tissue target cells. This adhesion process may initiate preferential lung metastasis of RCC (PMID: 10675485). Biosynthesis of disialylgalactosylgloboside (DSGG) is mediated by sialyltransferases from MSGG (monosialylgalactosylgloboside) (PMID: 17123352). Antidisialosyl antibodies have been found in some patients with chronic idiopathic ataxic neuropathy (CIAN) (PMID: 12420092). Globosides are glycosphingolipids. There are four types of glycosphingolipids, the cerebrosides, sulfatides, globosides and gangliosides. Globosides are cerebrosides that contain additional carbohydrates, predominantly galactose, glucose or GalNAc. Lactosyl ceramide is a globoside found in erythrocyte plasma membranes. Globotriaosylceramide (also called ceramide trihexoside) contains glucose and two moles of galactose and accumulates, primarily in the kidneys, of patients suffering from Fabry disease.
